What do hamsters eat?


        The diet of your hamster so important to maintain good health and increase the lifespan of your pet. Hamsters can become overweight or underweight if they are fed too much of the wrong foods.  

      They hoard any surplus food for later consumption, so be careful not to give your hamster too much of anything that can spoil.  They are pretty good at hiding food and you may not be able to find it.  

       Too many sunflower seeds or peanuts are the leading cause of obesity in hamsters.  They can be used as treats and inside of foods in moderation. Purchase a quality grain mix or pellet, and feed your hamster daily.

 Do not wait until your hamster eats everything in its bowl.  Not all hamsters will eat everything you serve and they can go hungry.

        Lab pellets are a larger pressed pellet. Examine the ingredients of any food you purchase and carefully check the bag to ensure freshness and a lack of bugs. (Place the bag in the freezer for 24 hours before using, which should kill any bugs.) Always make sure that your hamster has some extra food.

 What are the best hamster treats?

The best treats are healthy treats fed in moderation. Small pieces of fresh fruits or vegetables are also appreciated.

To avoid stomach upset and wet tail which is detrimental to your hamster's life.  Introduce fruits and vegetables in moderation if your hamster is not used to them. 

Apples, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, and strawberries are hamster favorites. 

Avoid citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions, and iceberg lettuce, which can all cause distress. 

Remove anything your hamster has not eaten because they will hide it and it may spoil under your watch because you cannot see it. 




Other healthy treats include small amounts of tofu, plain egg, boiled chicken, unflavored yogurt, and small pieces of bread or cooked pasta.

Hamsters enjoy an occasional small dog biscuit, which also serves to keep their teeth trimmed.

    1. One of my favorite videos on YouTube are of a chef preparing a hamster a mini 🌯 meal in a fancy hamster restaurant. The hamster stuffs two whole mini burritos in it's mouth. They love a large variety of food. But by the looks of that video, I'm not sure they taste it.
