Preventing a tick bite on a cat or dog

Ticks can bite humans and other mammals also. This article is for your pet's protection.  It aims at preventing tick bites on your pet and demonstrates how to remove a tick.  

Ticks carry disease and can multiply quickly. A female can lay several thousand eggs at a time.  Um... YUCK

Lyme disease can be managed but the effects can last.  Ticks can cause so many problems.  This article is primarily addressing how to prevent them from biting a pet and tick removal. Here is some information if you are looking to study about a tick.  
          

Ticks are a huge problem and I am going to talk about tick prevention.  I am familiar with this nuisance because I worked as a Professional Pet Stylist. Preventative medicine for a pet can come in a variety of forms.  

Here are some measures that can be taken to prevent tick problems

• Treat your yard- You can hire a company to spray your hard or do this yourself.  Here are some yard treatments.

• Topical treatments-(spot-on treatments)  They come in natural forms but chemical forms are what really prevent ticks from biting. I have seen so many infestations on pets treated with natural products.  Here are a few tick treatment options

• Sprays and powders work but may not be as long-lasting
• Pills that work internally from the veterinarian are great but the tick may try to bite
• Combination of all above tactics

If you have a cat be sure to use only approved cat products

If you find that your pet has a tick, there are flea and tick shampoos that will help the tick to die or to drop off of your pet.  They can hang on after they are dead and will need to be removed.  Do not squeeze a tick as their insides are dangerous. 

If you remove the tick, place it in rubbing alcohol. You may find that a Professional Pet Stylist or Veterinarian will be able to remove it quickly.

Conclusion

Ticks can make your pet sick.  A veterinarian can both remove a tick if you are uncomfortable and test for a disease in your pet.  Here are some preventative options for ticks. 

If you live in a wooded area, natural tick treatments may not be strong enough.  I have seen ticks inside a dog's ears even when they have been treated with flea and tick chemicals. 

Sometimes the best option is to get an oral flea and tick pill from a veterinarian.  They can also guide you on the treatment options. This will ensure a tick will not live or want to bite your pet.
